Underground gay group shakes up Christian college

Michael Musser / Biola University

The emergence of an underground gay group at Biola University has led to a wide-ranging debate about Christianity and homosexuality.

By John Boxley and Ashley Bornancin, NBC News

LA MIRADA, Calif.?-- On the same day President Obama became the first U.S. president to come out in support of same-sex marriage, a group of students announced the presence of the "Biola Queer Underground" at this small evangelical university, touching off a?highly-charged debate about Christianity and homosexuality.

The group launched a website and posted flyers around the Biola?University campus May 9?with the following message: "We want to bring to light the presence of the LGBTQ community at Biola. Despite what some may assume, there are Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender, and Queers at Biola. We are Biola's students, alumni, employees, and fellow followers of Christ. We want to be treated with equality and respected as another facet of Biola's diversity."

The emergence of the group, whose members remain anonymous, has shaken this 104-year-old Christian college in Southern California.?Like many schools rooted in evangelical?Christianity,?Biola has a code of standards that includes prohibitions on sex outside of marriage and same-sex relationships: Sex is "designed by God to be expressed solely within a marriage between a husband and wife," according to Biola's student handbook, which goes on to say that "sexual misconduct, depending on the facts and circumstances of each case will result in disciplinary action."

With debate raging over the group and its aims, Biola President Barry Corey told students that the school has no intention of changing its policy to "fit increasingly accepted ethical or moral norms. In particular, we don't need to modernize or bend our biblically based position on sexual ethics."

The school also issued a new statement on ?human sexuality? which calls same-sex relationships "illegitimate moral options for the confessing Christian.? The statement was in the works before the gay group announced itself, but BQU said it showed the "one-sided" nature of the conversation, with no room for those who believe homosexuality isn't sinful.

Chris Grace, vice president for student development at Biola, said the school would like to engage in conversation with the underground group but has been stymied by the members' anonymity. ?We really are at a disadvantage here because we don?t know who these people are,? Grace said, adding that the university would "love and welcome a conversation with them and that?s what we are hoping for."

But members of BQU, who would only comment for this story anonymously, fear that by "coming out" they would be punished and possibly expelled. They said they consider themselves Christians "first and foremost" and love Biola, and are not looking to create "a war" on campus, but they are looking to have an open discussion about what it means to be Christian and gay.

Eventually, Members of the group would like to "come out" and be open about their sexuality. "It?s important to our integrity to not have parts of us be hidden even among the Christian community,? a member said.

One of the members said there is a lot of guilt in the Christian community over homosexuality, but wonders if that guilt is coming from "God, the Holy Spirit or is that guilt coming from sections of the Christian society?"

Visit "Biola Queer Underground" to read members' stories

"Biola is probably not going to change their doctrinal stance for a while; they are going to have their theological stance being against homosexuality for quite some time, that doesn't mean the culture, doesn?t mean they have to discipline openly gay students,? said one of the group?s leaders.

Grace dismissed the notion that students who are "struggling with homosexuality" would face expulsion. "I guess you'd almost call that a myth that students would get expelled for that," Grace said. Instead, Biola offers students an "open-door policy" to talk about their struggles and receive spiritual counseling. But he makes it clear that for a student who identifies as gay and is engaging in "gay behavior and unwilling to uphold our community standards we would initiate the dismissal process."

Debate about the group has raged among students and in the campus newspaper.

Samuel Smith, a cinema and media arts major, objected to the fact the members won?t come forward. ?If you want an honest and true discussion about what they're going through, I feel they shouldn't be anonymous.?

Alexis Hughes, a biblical studies major, said the gay group?s anonymity is telling. "Obviously, if it's underground, they know it?s wrong and on some level they know they shouldn't be doing it"

Gabriela Cacanindin, a business major, was hopeful the wider campus would be open to hearing what the group has to say. "I hope that we are open to the dialogue that needs to happen... ."

But a female underground member says a true conversation is difficult. "I have sat in so many classes where we would a conversation about homosexuality and I can?t tell my story because I am too afraid of getting in trouble, so how is that a conversation at all?"

The group said they have received hate mail and they call some of the comments expressed in the school newspaper so painful that they had to quit reading it. One of them read, ?If you embrace the lifestyle, you are at odds with God and scripture, and it is extremely doubtful that you are a Christian.?

"We get questions, ?Why are you even in school, Why are you causing a ruckus, Why don?t you just leave??" one of the members told us.

Not discouraged, the members of the gay group say they are here to stay. And, they added, they have received plenty of support in the community and around the country.

"In some ways I'm shocked at how horrible people can be, but I'm also shocked at how wonderful people are too,? said one.

They draw comfort in the fact that?more Americans now support than oppose same-sex marriage, according to a recent Gallup poll, and are convinced that Biola will eventually "come around."

School officials already are looking ahead to next year, when Biola celebrates its 105th anniversary, and they said plans are in the works to facilitate an ?ongoing conversation? with students about homosexuality.

Going to the moon? Don't touch the artifacts

Don?t say you haven?t been warned. NASA put out an official document on Thursday specifying how close any future spacecraft and astronauts visiting the moon can come to the artifacts left there by all U.S. space missions, including the Apollo landing sites, robotic landing sites such as Surveyor's, and spacecraft impact sites.

These recommendations are not mandatory ? there?s obviously no way to enforce this yet. Instead, the document says the guidelines are "offered to inform lunar spacecraft mission planners interested in helping preserve and protect lunar historic artifacts and potential science opportunities for future missions."

For example, NASA recommends an artifact boundary extending 75 meters (246 feet) from the Apollo 11 lunar module descent stage, and an exclusion zone extending even farther (225 meters, or 738 feet) for the Apollo 17 site.

NASA isn?t expecting a rush of astro-looters to descend upon the moon, but with China discussing a moon landing, and with several Google Lunar X Prize teams hoping to send robotic landers, the space agency wants to make sure nothing from previous missions is disturbed.

"In the 50 years since the first lunar missions, the spaceflight community has not formally provided recommendations to the next generation of lunar explorers on how to preserve the original artifacts and protect ongoing science from the potentially damaging effects of nearby landers,? NASA said in an accompanying press release, saying that they recognize the steadily increasing technical capabilities of spacefaring commercial entities and nations throughout the world that may be on the verge of landing spacecraft on the surface of the Moon.

The document specifies how close another spacecraft can hover, fly over, hop or touch down near landing sites or spacecraft. NASA suggests a "descent/landing boundary" of 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) around lander sites such as the Apollo and Surveyor sites, and a boundary of 500 meters (0.3 miles) around impact sites such as the Ranger crash sites. Spacecraft should not cross that boundary during descent and landing, NASA said.

NASA?s decisions on proximity boundaries were made from recommendations from external experts from the historic, scientific and flight-planning communities and apply to US government artifacts on the lunar surface.

Hardware items aren't the only things included in the "don?t touch" areas: "U.S. human, human-robotic lunar presence, including footprints, rover tracks, etc., although not all anthropogenic indicators are protected as identified in the recommendations," the document says.

NASA says they released this document to open discussions with commercial and international space agencies, and seek any improvements to the recommendations.

Samsung Galaxy S III tops UK pre-order records, shows British love their quad-core

Galaxy S III hands-on

The British clearly didn't waste any time once pre-orders opened up for the Galaxy S III, which just broke through pre-order records for at least one carrier and one retailer in the country. Carphone Warehouse's chief commercial officer Graham Stapleton says that the quad-core, 4.8-inch flagship is the quickest-moving pre-order of the year "so far," while Vodafone UK adds that the new Galaxy is its most pre-ordered Android device to date. Without hard numbers, though, it's difficult not to couch the successes in relative terms: both are using conditional language that makes clear neither record is absolute and that they might be eclipsed by companies with a knack for building early demand. Even so, that pride in early results suggests the third time is indeed the charm and that Samsung won't have much trouble filling its own pop-up stores with customers at the end of the month.

A-Rod powers Yankees with pair of homers

By HOWIE RUMBERG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:26 p.m. ET May 23, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - On Tuesday night, after another mediocre game at the plate, Alex Rodriguez insisted he was ready to go on a tear.

He knew what he was talking about.

A-Rod gave Will Smith a rude welcome to the major leagues Wednesday night, hitting two homers off the rookie to back another strong start for Andy Pettitte and lead the New York Yankees over the Kansas City Royals 8-3.

"I said it with conviction not because it was going to sound good here in my locker but because I felt it," Rodriguez said. "It's good to back that up."

Rodriguez snapped a 52 at-bat homerless drought and drove in three runs for New York. Curtis Granderson also connected off Smith and the Yankees scored three times in the fifth with help from some inept relief pitching.

Derek Jeter had three hits to tie Paul Waner for 15th with 3,152. Before Jeter singled in the eighth, Waner had been the only player who reached a bigger hits milestone than Jeter in a Yankees uniform. "Big Poison" got just one hit with New York, his final one in a career spent mostly in Pittsburgh.

New York scored as many as three runs in the first inning for the first time in 31 games since April 19 and finished a 3-3 homestand. The Yankees start a 10-game trip at Oakland on Friday following their first consecutive wins since taking three in a row from May 10-12.

Pettitte (2-1) followed eight innings of four-hit ball against Cincinnati with seven-plus crafty innings in his third start since coming out of retirement. He gave Smith a lesson in mixing pitches and working out of difficult situations.

"I feel like I'm moving the ball around the zone and that makes it difficult to hit," Pettitte said.

In the third inning, first baseman Mark Teixeira started a double play with a diving stop. Pettitte got out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth with a strikeout - one of his eight Ks - giving a slight fist pump walking off the mound.

"He's as good as I've ever seen over there," Pettitte said about Teixeira.

Pettitte gave up seven hits, including homers to Billy Butler and Mitch Maier. The 39-year-old left-hander has not lost to Kansas City since 1999. In 24 games against the Royals, he is 14-3.

"I faced him before he retired and now after he came back, and I actually see things different that he's doing," Butler said. "He's throwing more off-speed stuff, more curveballs and changeups. Before it was 90 to 94 with hard cut in on you. You knew he was throwing it and he knew you knew he was throwing it, and it was going to beat you. But he's crafted his game and his last two starts have been great."

Smith (0-1), a 22-year old called up from Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday - not the actor with a movie coming out this weekend - started off with an out for the scrapbook: He got Jeter to hit a grounder to shortstop. But it was rocky the rest of the first for the lefty who was two months shy of 6 when Pettitte made his debut in 1995.

"I was nervous a little bit, facing a future Hall of Famer to start your career, in Derek Jeter," Smith said. "That was cool at the same time, but you still got to go out there and make your pitches and get people out."

Granderson homered to deep right on a 1-2 pitch. TV showed Smith's mom in the stands shaking her head: welcome to the big leagues, son. After a walk to Teixeira, A-Rod crushed a ball into the left field stands for a 3-0 lead.

By the time Nick Swisher hit a pop up with two outs, Smith's mom couldn't watch: she had covered her face with her hands. It was an out, mom.

When Rodriguez homered in the third to center field, mom sat stunned with her hands behind her head.

"She was nervous. She's been like that since I was in high school," Smith said. "She and my dad ... my dad used to pace around the stadium. They always get nervous and always will be."

Rodriguez had just one RBI since he last homered and drove in three runs on May 6 at Kansas City, 15 games ago. It was Rodriguez's 60th multihomer game.

Smith was lifted after giving up a one-out single in the fourth. He yielded five runs and six hits in 3 1-3 innings. Luis Mendoza, the pitcher originally slated to start Wednesday night, relieved.

Rodriguez came up in the fifth with the bases loaded and grounded into a fielder's choice. Jeter, who bunted for a hit, was forced out at home.

The Yankees came in 8 for 41 (.195) with the bases loaded but they didn't need a hit in that situation in the fifth to score their runs. The Yankees walked three times and were twice hit by pitches in the inning. Robinson Cano had an RBI fielder's choice - a nice diving stop by shortstop Alcides Escobar - and Andruw Jones and Teixeira, back in the 3-hole after two games batting seventh, walked to force in runs.

"It's a club that a lot of times works the count really well and is going to have its share of walks," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Eric Hosmer went 3 for 4 with an RBI to raise his average to .191 for the Royals.

NOTES: The Royals dropped to 4-3 in the deciding game of series this season. ... New York went 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position, leaving the Yankees 9 for 85 (.106) in their last nine games.

How Roofing Professionals Can Assist You with Ice Dam Eradication

Winterization is among the most essential preparation practices needed for preserving homes. Garages, windows, attics, doors, and roofing systems are among the parts of residential buildings which are covered by this process. Shingles and the rest of the roofing frame must be cleaned and conditioned to help them endure the cold blows of the forthcoming winter time.

Nonetheless, no matter how ready roofs may be, there are some inescapable incidents like the development of frozen portions or ice dams on the roofing structure. These often originate from the intricate reaction between the external temperatures and heat loss from a house interior. Unfortunately, ice dams melt through time and result in ugly leaks on walls, ceilings, and attics.

If these aren't instantly taken out of the roofs, ice dams may cause more damage by leaking through the layers of shingles and by rotting the wood roofing frames. Gutters may also be affected; this can lead to problems on flooding. In the future, the heavy frozen weight on the gutters can drag the structure down and completely ruin roofing systems.

And so before it gets far too late, homeowners should learn about the fundamentals of ice dam removal to spare their rooftops from expensive and troublesome devastation. As proposed by experienced home builders, residents may start by cleaning up their roofs and gutters so ice dams do not have anything to begin with. The axiom 'prevention is better than cure' is also appropriate to roofing systems.

On the other hand, those who are already problematic regarding their frozen and sliding roofing systems may start with modest attempts of ice dam removal. They can ascend to their rooftops and properly get rid of the formations, and they may also modify interior ventilation systems to prevent heating their roofing systems further. However, given that climbing up on roofing system is dangerous specifically during snow storms, homeowners are instead advised to get in touch with roofing emergency service from trustworthy Twin cities roofing experts.

For instance, reputable Minneapolis roofing professionals can carry out the required examination as well as the actual ice dam eradication. They do not have to worry about climbing up on roofing systems because these skilled professionals can definitely get the job done. Even though Minneapolis and its twin city always have snowy winters, residences can nevertheless be safeguarded as risks of ice dams are eliminated.

A group of St Paul roofing experts can also deliver repairs and replacements in case of roofing segments damaged by the frozen dams. These roof professionals can offer removal services to liberate homes from mounting risks and problems. For additional info on removing ice dams from roofing structures, go to ehow.com/how_8030144_flat-roof-ice-removal.html.

Grow Your Business Online

Posted by Craig Ridley on May 19th, 2012

Grow your business

In the current scenario regarding economic conditions, to grow your business seems to be almost impossible as it will cost you a lot which you can bear if you have no financial restrictions but for a new and small business, it?s like moving a mountain. In order to market your business, one should have sound knowledge regarding the trends of market and customers. Through the development of internet, now everyone is going online and you have to do the same to grow your business. In order to grow your business online, you should follow the points described below:

To grow your business online, you must have an attractive website which could represent the determination of your goal oriented plans. When you will adopt different kinds of methods, either paid or non-paid to market your business regarding the products or services you provide, your customers will firstly come to your website to judge your business status. This shows how important is to have a reflective website if you want to grow your business online as well. Having an attractive website will surely convert these visitors into sales of your product.

Grow Your Business Through Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising:

To grow your business, your website should have top ranking among others. When ever you look for any business on internet, the results shown for your searched keywords on the first page are highly ranked and most visited sites. This happens due to PPC advertising. PPC has been very effective when it comes to grow your business campaign. PPC is a process of paying a certain amount when ever user clicks on an ad which comes into view for a particular keyword search. In order to grow your business, PPC is the choice of many businesses but all of them can?t afford it as its prices are increasing rapidly due to its high demand.

Banner Advertising And?Email Marketing:

Now it is very common among other methods to grow your business by promoting it through e-mail marketing. By the term e-mail marketing, it means that one acquires the data of many people who have e-mail accounts through reliable sources. Then marketing is done through software which sends the desired information regarding your business to those e-mail id?s which helps greatly to market your business online. You could also grow your business without purchasing any such data by setting up such a way on your website which saves the data of the visitor and then you could keep him/her updated regarding your latest products or services through e-mail marketing. This method is a kind of annoying for customers but helps a lot to grow your business sales. You could also advertise through banners to grow your business online on certain websites. These websites could be those who are selling identical products like yours or could be any other website which shows huge traffic turnover on monthly basis. These banners could also be advertised on social networks, or on blogs or online newspapers. Banner advertising could be expensive in order to grow your business as websites with high traffic could charge a lot for promoting your business on their sites. But one should always plan their marketing campaign that which suits most to market your business online.

Above are few basic methods which will help you to grow your business online but care should be taken while adopting any campaign that either it is effective for your nature of business or not.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
